I’m really excited to share something fun with you today.  I was recently contacted by SPUD (Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery) and asked if I would be willing to try out their new juicing produce boxes and share them with you. An excuse to juice more fresh, local produce? Of course I was up for the challenge!

I’ve seen SPUD’s delivery trucks around Seattle, but didn’t know too much about their company until recently. The more I learn about them, the more I love their mission. SPUD was founded in 1997 as a sustainable way to directly connect local farmers with customers. 100% of their produce is either certified organic or locally and sustainable produced and over 50% of their products are sourced locally.

One of the things I love most about SPUD is that it’s incredibly convenient to order produce online and since the deliveries are consolidated into specific routes, one of their vans leaves with their warehouse with over 100 orders, reducing both pollution and traffic. Pretty cool, huh? SPUD currently serves 6 urban areas in North America: Seattle and the Eastern Puget Sound, the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles and Orange County, Vancouver, Victoria and Vancouver Island to Nanaimo, and Calgary (see their full delivery map here).

SPUD recently started a new Juicing at Home program and now offers Organic Juicing Boxes for people who are looking to boost their health by juicing and want a convenient way to save time and money. I was really excited to try out SPUD because it’s hard to get local produce here in Seattle during the winter and a lot of produce in the grocery store just isn’t as fresh as I’d like it to be. I couldn’t wait to check out my box when it arrived! (Although Inspector Kitty beat me to it!)

I opted to try out the Organic Dynamic Beauty Juicing Box, which includes apples, beets, carrots, celery, chard, cilantro, cucumber, ginger, kale, lemons, green bell peppers, and spearmint. I honestly haven’t seen local chard and mint this beautiful since summer! All of the produce arrived colorful, crisp, and fresh. I couldn’t wait to get juicing!

SPUD even let me test out the Hurom Slow Juicer, which is one of the juicers they offer in their juicing program. I’ve always heard such wonderful things about this slow juicer so I was really excited to try it out for myself!

I have to say that one of the things I loved most about SPUD’s organic juicing boxes is that is is so convenient compared to grocery shopping! I work downtown so I usually end up shopping at the Whole Foods nearby my office and then carting home groceries on the bus. This isn’t always easy since juicing tends to use up a lot of produce! I love that this box of beautiful, fresh local produce was delivered right to me – and all I had to do was complete a simple online order!

The first juice I made was a liver detoxification juice, based on a recipe included in my produce box. This juice promotes the flow of bile and fat to and from the liver.     Wow, what a fantastic program! I wish something like that was offered in my area (Ireland). Back home in Iowa we had a great CSA program which I miss dearly. Every week I would look forward to what goodies the box contained.

    What do you think of the Hurom? That is the exact model I have back home. I was always quite pleased with it.

      I just watched a great juice fasting documentary. It’s called “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead”. I have been wanting to watch it soo bad and just found a way to watch it for free. This guy in the movie travels the U.S. and only drinks juice. He looks like a different person after doing his juice fast. I recommend watching this movie for anyone wanting to lose weight.     The Hurom seems to work great so far! By the way, I love the grapefruit, lime, and ginger juice you just made! I haven’t juiced grapefruit much, but that sounds like a winning combination!

    I think I must break down and buy a juicer-I only have a Vitamix and beets just don’t ‘drink’ well that way. Your recipes and photos have convinced me! What a great program.

    Juicing is definitely the way to go, both for detox purposes, to kick start weightloss and just on a continual basis to keep our bodies in check! Myself and my brother own a wholefood store, restaurant and juice bar in Ireland…we’re spreading the wheatgrass love around the country! :) If you ever visit you’ll have to stop by!

      I’m actually going to be doing a post soon on different juicers. I’ve been experimenting with the Hurom Slow Juicer (although I don’t own one) and I’m a little torn between that one and my old Jack Lalanne. I’ll keep you posted! :)

    First time commenting on your blog. The first recipe to try was spiced buttersquash with cashews – i left out the cayenne and it still tasted fantastic.

    I recently watching the juicing and smoothie video with my 5 year old and he was super excited. We do occasionally juice and I let him put the veggies through the juicer.

    What combination of juices would you recommend for bloating and gas? I had some dry figs and chickpeas the other day and the bloating does not seem to go away.

      I’d definitely recommend fennel and ginger to help with digestion and bloating. Cucumber, fennel, and ginger would be a fabulous combination. Hope you have fun juicing & feel better soon!

    I just moved from Seattle to Kansas City and I miss SPUD SOOOO so much! I finally found Fresh Connect here, which is the same concept just on a much smaller scale. I hope though they will eventually be able to expand their offering like SPUD but they do offer plenty of produce items at a great price. I just found your blog and bookmarked it – I can’t wait to read all your posts! I find it funny I lived in Seattle the whole time your blog was available and I just found it after moving 2000 miles away. Better late than never I guess! Thank you for all that you do.

    Hi i came across this and found it to be wonderful my father would like to try this but the beets might become a problem since he is a diabetic. Is there something else i might be able to use instead of the beet’s?

      You can sub another root veggie like carrots or a green veggie like cucumber or celery. The recipe is pretty flexible. Hope that helps! :)

    HI, after a whole year researching on which juicer and contemplating whether or not I should do this, I just finaly went ahead and did this. Yay for me. But when I got my juicing box it didn’t come with a “customized recipe” which has me a little sad as I couldn’t jump right on in and make a juice. I did find some carrots (old) in my fridge as well as a canelope and celery, so I did make a juice, but it didn’t tastes great (just good) but I think that the carrots were done.

    I’ve make a call to spud to see about the recipes that I thought I shouldv’e received and still haven’t herd anything back. Fingers crossed that I hear back from them today.

      Hmm, that’s a bummer. I’ve always had good experiences with SPUD so I hope they get back to you right away. They have a bunch of juice recipes on their website that might be helpful too. :)
